HFT or Hunter Field Target as it is known is an air rifle target shooting discipline,
that consists of shooting metal targets set out in various hunting type scenarios, these targets may be placed in the open, up trees,
partially obscured, behind hay bales, etc the list of target placement endless and is determined only by the imagination of the course setter.
It is usual that 30 targets would make up a typical course, but it is not unknown that some clubs host special events with far more
targets being put out on the course.
Each shooter takes one shot at each target from a peg which will be the designated point to shoot that target,
the pegs are numbered to correspond to a specific target.
Our HFT events take place in fields and woodland.
2 points are scored for knocking down the target, 1 point is scored for hitting the face plate of he target and no points
are scored for a miss or shooting the wrong target.

The targets we use are metal re-settable targets that have a hit/kill zones in varying sizes from 15mm up to 45mm,
which if struck by your pellet will cause the target to fall down. Targets are placed around the course at distances
varying from 8 yards to 45 yards from the shooting peg.
There is no limitation to the rifle used, so long as it's power is sub 12ftlbs, these rifles usually have telescopic sights mounted,
but open iron sights have been used.
There are 3 shooting positions that can be used, prone, kneeling, and standing. The positions can be dictated by signs at the peg or
by using the terrain to force a positional shot.
HFT has a national affiliation network called the UKAHFT, they organise national events and set a standard framework for clubs to use.
More details about the UKAHFT can be found on our links page.
Our club will soon have it's own BFTA instructors, so if you are in need of any advice or help, just ask.
